Continuity and Change: Evangelical Calvinism among 18th century Baptist Ministers trained at Bristol Baptist Academy, 1690-1791.
Dr Roger Hayden [2006] 273 pages
Originally written as a doctoral thesis for Keele University [1991], it has been updated and revised for a wider readership. Dr Hayden argues that a key centre for Evangelical Calvinism was Broadmead Baptist Church, Bristol, under the successive leadership of Bernard Foskett, and the father and son team of Hugh and Caleb Evans. Each was pastor of the church and Principal of the Baptist Academy. Adopting the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith as their doctrinal standard, the pastors encouraged a covenant theology based on Christian experience, developed congregational hymn-singing, introduced ministerial training strategies and took part in home mission. In an original and persuasive book, Dr Hayden asks fellow Baptist historians to review their understanding 18th century Particular Baptists, moving their focus away from London to the pivotal part played by Broadmead, Bristol, where over 200 Baptist ministers were trained in the period, who served in England, Wales, Ireland and America. This is a major contribution to international Baptist studies.
